TWELVE
Mia’s stomach tied into knots as she entered the dining room. She hated eating alone. She hadn’t wanted to come down at all, thinking she’d just have room service, but by about nine she’d finally decided she’d go nuts cooped up all alone. Being around other people, even if they were at other tables was better than sitting in her room alone.
What had she been thinking coming all the way to the Carib be an after Aiden? Clearly, he loved this new woman of his. Clearly, he didn’t want Mia back—which sent her ego crashing down around her ankles.
She had really believed he’d be happy to see her—that he’d want her back. After all, he’d loved her so much. He’d shown that in so many ways.
She remembered when she’d been house-sitting at her brother’s isolated home in the country and she’d woken up at 4 A.M. to see a red light on the alarm system. She’d listened intently for any sounds of an intruder. The house was big and strange and every noise sounded threatening. She’d gotten herself all worked up and finally snatched up the phone and called Aiden. Even though he’d had to start work at 9 A.M. the next morning, he’d talked to her until she’d calmed down, then made the forty-five- minute drive to spend the rest of the night with her. She’d felt so cherished and protected sleeping in his arms.
The next evening, Aiden had figured out the light simply indicated an interruption in the security service when the Internet-based phone service it relied on had gone down briefly. He’d spent every night with her for the rest of the week so she wouldn’t be all alone.
She’d been a fool to break up with him. It had been so wonderful basking in the warmth of his love—his adoration.
The problem was, she’d never felt she quite deserved him—or the intense love he held for her.
When Craig had come into her life, the attraction of a new love had turned her head. The fact that someone else wanted her boosted her ego. But she’d never really loved C raig—and obviously he hadn’t loved her or he wouldn’t have dumped her for another woman.
Now Mia realized what she’d had with Aiden. She’d decided to push aside her insecurities about deserving his love, and she kept telling herself her doubts about her feelings for him were just a different form of insecurity. After all, how could any woman know when she’d met Mr. Right? All new lovers sent tingles through you and sent your heartbeat into double-time. Infatuation wasn’t hard to recognize. It was love that was difficult.
But she loved Aiden. The fact that she’d longed for him as soon as she found herself alone was a sure sign.
So she’d had to take a shot. For both their sakes.
Maybe he loved this other woman.
Or . . . maybe he just needed time to think about it. Mia had decided she would stay the week—that would give him time to change his mind.
